A Wake-Up Call for Industrial Sites Everywhere
Last week, headlines broke about a terrifying tunnel collapse in Los Angeles, where a group of underground construction workers became trapped deep inside a tunnel – six miles from the entrance and 400 feet below ground. A cave-in occurred between the workers and the tunnel boring machine, cutting off their exit route.
To escape, workers had to scramble over unstable piles of loose soil, more than 12 feet high, just to reach the machine. From there, they were extracted using a crane-lifted rescue cage – thanks to the rapid and strategic actions of the Los Angeles County Fire Department’s specialized rescue team.
This rescue wasn’t just successful – it was a testament to preparation, training, and a rescue plan that worked.
Why This Matters for Your Facility
If your operations include tunnels, confined spaces, or underground systems, this incident is a clear reminder:
Emergencies don’t wait for the right moment – they demand the right preparation.
Too often, we see confined space rescue plans written just to check a compliance box. But when the soil starts to move or the oxygen drops, a document won’t save lives – a trained team will.
How JLN Safety Prepares for the Unexpected
At JLN Safety, we believe rescue readiness is not optional. That’s why our rescue teams train year-round at our dedicated industrial rescue training center in Old Lyme, Connecticut.
Here’s what sets our confined space and industrial rescue services apart:
Real-World Training in Industrial Settings
We don’t simulate safety in a classroom. Our crews train on full-scale industrial mockups, including tank entries, vertical lifts, and horizontal tunnels—mirroring the actual risks seen in power plants, refineries, and utility systems.
Powered by CMC Rescue Gear
Our teams use and train with CMC Rescue Tools, the industry standard in rope and confined space rescue. Familiarity with elite gear means faster, safer responses on real scenes.
Custom Rescue Plans for Every Job
Whether you’re managing an outage, a permit-required confined space, or tunnel entry, we’ll build a site-specific rescue plan and provide the NFPA-compliant standby rescue teams to support it.
On-Demand, Experienced Rescue Crews

Our rescue professionals include veteran responders, certified technicians, and safety specialists ready to deploy across North America and beyond. When you work with JLN Safety, you don’t just get a service – you get a partner in prevention.
Are You Rescue-Ready?
The LA tunnel rescue had a successful outcome because the plan was in place – and the team was prepared.
Now’s the time to ask:
- Does your site have a functional confined space rescue plan?
- Has your team trained for real-world emergency scenarios?
- Do you have a third-party rescue team on standby when lives are at stake?
Let’s Make Sure the Answer Is “Yes.”
